U2 to play free show to mark fall of Berlin Wall

BERLIN — Achtung, baby: U2 will play a free concert in Berlin to help the city celebrate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Music network MTV said the Irish rockers will perform in front of the Brandenburg Gate on Nov. 5 during the MTV Europe Music Awards

The show will be beamed into the awards ceremony at Berlin's O2 World arena.
U2 manager Paul McGuinness said it would be exciting to be in Berlin, "20 years almost to the day since the wall came down."

The wall fell Nov. 9, 1989, ending almost 30 years of separation between east and west.

U2's 1991 album "Achtung Baby" was partly inspired by the band's stay in the city.
Tickets for the show are available through the http://www.u2.com and http://www.mtvema.com Web sites from 0800 GMT (4 a.m. EDT) Wednesday.

One Crap Album and You're Out

U2 talks about adapting to the changing times on Yahoo.com:

Here's a clip of that article:

"But we weren't really in that mindset," he says, "and we felt that the album was a kind of an almost extinct species, and we should approach it in totality and create a mood and a feeling, and a beginning, middle and an end. And I suppose we've made a work that is a bit challenging for people who have grown up on a diet of pop stars."

U2 Live from Pasadena: More details

Taken directly from U2.com:

19 October 2009

California, US U2 have confirmed via video blog that their sold-out concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California, this Sunday, 25th October, will be streamed free, in full and live on YouTube. It's the first time a show of this size will be streamed live.

The Rose Bowl show is the penultimate U2 show this year - with more to come in 2010 - and already is set to host the venue's biggest ever audience of over 96,000 fans. The 360° Tour, which has been critically acclaimed and 're-invents rock'n'roll' (Rolling Stone Magazine), will now boast unique access for fans worldwide - as fans in territories yet to be visited by the tour, or not at all, will be able to enjoy the whole show online.

Managed in partnership with Live Nation, this sell-out tour has broken attendance records in most venues it has visited - its success due in part to increased capacity coupled with a lower ticket price and great sight lines afforded by the stunning in-the-round stage set.

U2 manager Paul McGuinness said, 'The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time. As we're filming the LA show, it's the perfect opportunity to extend the party beyond the stadium. Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 - this time U2 can go to them, globally.'

YouTube will be streaming live across five continents. The show will be available in the usual You Tube way, as video-on-demand, following two full replays - after the live stream - on both U2.com and You Tube.

'YouTube is thrilled to be able to provide our global audience with a live streaming performance from one of the world's greatest bands,' said Chris Maxcy, Director of YouTube Partner Development. 'We are always looking for new ways to connect fans around the world with their favourite artists, and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that.'

U2 Pass It’s almost a given for U2 shows to push the creative envelope, and U2 360°, the band’s tour in support of its latest album No Line on the Horizon, more than lives up to that reputation by totally redefining the live production experience and raising the bar for live outdoor sound.
The band is playing stadiums exclusively this time out, with a 360-degree audience configuration, ambitious staging, a cylindrical moving video screen, and a Clair sound system which marks the largest speaker system collection in touring history.

U2 360° also marks a 30-year relationship between U2, Clair, and the band’s audio director and FOH engineer, Joe O’Herlihy, who has been involved with the groundbreaking production from conceptualization to implementation.

“This ‘360’ tour concept was first envisioned at the end of the Vertigo tour in late 2006, but had been the band’s dream since the Joshua Tree days,” he explains. “They presented the idea as a goal for the next tour, and I was charged with developing, planning and implementing an audio design which would not only set new industry standards, but would also maintain what U2 and their fans have come to expect—sonic quality, high dynamic range, and crystal clear stadium sound.”

O’Herlihy, show designer Willie Williams, and Mark Fisher and Jeremy Lloyd from production architects/designers Stufish worked collaboratively with production director Jake Berry and Clair’s R&D and engineering team beginning in early 2008 to establish design criteria and structural requirements. “We knew that the PA system, type, and application design had to be a line source array system,” says O’Herlihy, “and the new Clair i-5 was the most timely and perfect solution to accommodate the off center stadium 360-degree configuration.” Final versions were approved nearly a year later, and featured a system which was based around the Clair i-5™ line array and fully integrated into the set design.

In early January 2009, O’Herlihy, the Clair Engineers and Berry tested their system design and theories by setting up the i-5/i-5b stadium system at Toronto’s Rogres Center (a.k.a. Sky Dome). Various tests included verifying sonic calculations and phase references, and establishing low end time alignment. The goal was to maintain full 360-degree coverage, and cover the audience from the highest seat right up to the edge of the stage with an even, uniform distribution of high SPL, full dynamic range, and high quality sound.

The massive sound system covers 15 zones with a combination of hangs: L/R hangs of 36 i-5 & 36 i-5B each side at FOH; L/R 24 i-5 & 24 i-5B, Rear; 16 i-5 & 16 i-5B at House L; and 16 i-5 & 16 i-5B at House R. Main stage front fills include 24 FF2 and 24 BT218 subs, while a “B” stage area includes 72 S4 subs.

For additional coverage and intelligibility in hard-to-reach areas, the main system is supplemented with four hangs of eight of Clair’s newest innovation, the iDL™, a two-way delay cabinet developed specifically to meet the unique requirements of the tour. Designed as a completely modular system to complement the Clair flagship i-Series, the i-DL features a single low/mid element and an interchangeable horn module, providing either 60° or 90° horizontal dispersion and 10° vertical coverage.

In addition, the system is powered by the largest number of amps ever put together by Clair for a tour—more than 150 Lab.gruppen model PLM 10000Q and PLM 14000, plus racks of Powersoft K10 units to power the low end. By conducting measurements with proprietary Clair AlignArray™ software, the crew has been able to calculate SPL required for an audience of up to 95,000.
O’Herlihy chose a DiGiCo SD7 console for its multi-matrix capacities and onboard effects. The SD7 works two 40-input stage racks, and has three stereo outputs for inside L/R, outside L/R and the matrix L/R, a combination of the inside and outside L/R for side hangs.

Joe O'Herlihy

Monitor duties for U2 360° are shared between Dave Skaff, Niall Slevin and Alistair McMillan. Both Slevin and McMillan mix on DiGiCo SD7s, with one assigned to Bono and another for The Edge. Skaff mans a Digidesign D-Show Pro for bassist Adam Clayton, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and an offstage keyboard player, Terry Lawless. With the virtually subterranean location of “monitor underworld,” the three have no direct sight lines with the band, and work off video monitors.
Band members use Future Sonics in-ear monitors, paired with Sennheiser G2 hardware, except for a selection of Clair 12AMII “Stealth” wedges for Bono, making for a virtually clean stage.
U2 in Berlin

“This has been a huge challenge for both Clair and for me, but we were able to complete it, despite working on a very stringent timetable,” says O’Herlihy. “A project of this scale would probably not have been attempted ten, or even five years ago. But thanks to lighter weight, highly efficient, lower profile speaker cabinets and digital mixing consoles, a show—even of this magnitude—can be designed, set up, run, and loaded out in a timely manner. Technology caught up with the concept and made it possible.”

U2 will tour Europe through late August, arriving on American shores in September. The band will play in North America until Oct. 28, and the tour projected to extend well into 2010.

U2 - Rochester NY Replay Sunday

My first ever U2 show came in Rochester NY on October 11th, 1987, during the Joshua Tree Tour. It rained and was a miserable day, but an amazing night. Bono's arm was in a sling, yet he didn't phone it in.

Rochester radio station 100.5 The Drive is doing a replay of the show. Not entirely sure if they have the bootleg, which is poor quality, or if they are mixing live songs from the tour together, or just playing studio versions. Either way, if you live in Rochester it might be worth checking out. I'll be checking it out online, for sure!

On Sunday October 11th, 1987, U2 played Silver Stadium on the historic Joshua Tree tour.

On Sunday October 11th, 2009, the Drive will recreate this historic concert, song for song.

The concert will begin at 6pm this Sunday (the approximate time they took the stage 22 years ago), commercial free, on 100.5 the Drive.

Rock Band: U2?

From The USA Today:

U2: 'We definitely would like to be' in video game
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY

U2 may reconsider joining Rock Band. A year ago, the Irish quartet was in talks with the video game maker about lending their songs and likenesses to a version of the popular series. At that time, U2 bowed out, but the debut of The Beatles: Rock Band, with its faithful depictions of the Fab Four, may change the band’s minds.
“We definitely would like to be in there, but we felt some of the compromises weren’t what we wanted, bassist Adam Clayton tells USA TODAY's Edna Gundersen. “That could change. I love the idea that that’s where people are getting music, and we’d love to be in that world. We’ll figure something out. What The Beatles have done, where the animation is much more representative of them, is what we’re interested in, rather than the one-size-fits-all animation. We didn’t want to be caricatured.

U2 is already following The Beatles into the record books. The Liverpool quartet was the first act to ever play a stadium, packing 55,600 fans into Shea Stadium on Aug. 15, 1965. The gross: $304,000. U2, starring in the biggest touring production ever staged, is breaking records at every stop on its high-tech 360° Tour. The band drew a record 84,472 to Giants Stadium on Sept. 24. The take? Roughly $8 million. Read more from Bono and the guys in our story here, our cool panoramic interactive view from the stage here and see concert photos here.Â

To Hell With Genre (From U2.com)

Taken directly from U2.com:

06 October 2009

Rolling Stone was suitably wowed by Sunday's show which it reports was 'curated with eclectic bravura by Hal Willner' and turned into 'a riotous three-hour party, with a to-hell-with-genre rollcall of the many friends Friday has made in his art-rock pop-art film-score and noir-theater travels.'

And the members of U2 were all over the show: 'Bono the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. were on and off stage half a dozen times; U2's Friday covers included 'I Want to Live' (done with techno drive and Joshua Tree-like space) and the crusted-glam bomb 'King of Trash.' Bono also took a solo spot, turning on his Irish Sinatra for the Shag Tobacco elegy 'The Last Song I'll Ever Sing.'

Jon Pareles in the New York Times found 'the concert juxtaposed delicacy and brute force, intimacy and irony. It had tender moments, like Mr. Friday's opening 'Apologia'; duets with Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons) on 'He Got What He Wanted' and 'Angel'; and Mr. Friday's desolate 'You Take Away the Sun,' with the shimmering backup of Bill Frisell on guitar, Hank Roberts on cello and Mr. Seezer on piano.

'Martha Wainwright gave a luminous performance of 'You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart,' a ballad steeped in Irish tradition that was written by Mr. Friday, Mr. Seezer and Bono; Andrea Corr, of the Irish pop group the Corrs, was poised and gentle in 'Time Enough for Tears.'

Spinner said the show was 'a dream for fans as the hallowed hall saw incredible pairings, performances and different sides of well-known artists.

'Early in the night, after Friday and Courtney Love rocked their way through a steamy cover of Magazine's 'The Light Pours Out of Me,' Friday said, 'Only one thing can follow that,' and brought out Scarlett Johansson and Rufus Wainwright. That one-upmanship kept going until the end of the night, when after a magnificent solo turn by Bono, Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed came out to join Friday, the Edge and Bono for a raucous post-modern 'Sweet Jane.' How do you improve on that?'

The Day after the U2 Concert
Posted: Oct 02, 2009 6:09 PM Updated: Oct 02, 2009 6:12 PM

The Day after the U2 Concert

The music has stopped, but the U2 hype isn't over. It will be another few days before all signs of the big concert disappear from Charlottesville.

The field at Scott Stadium is looking a lot emptier than it did Thursday night. Crews have been working there since the concert, taking down the lights and video screens. They completed that task at 4 a.m.

Now they're working on deconstructing the metal stage structure, with the help of four cranes. It will take crews until about 7 a.m. Sunday to finish up.

Outside the stadium last night, people in charge of the concert say traffic went exactly as planned. For the bars and restaurant on the corner, the crowds were much bigger than any standard concert at the John Paul Jones Arena.

"It actually hit like we would never believe. The concerts around here, JPJ, two hours beforehand you get hit, you're done. But yesterday everyone was out from 2:30-3:00 to 8:30, concert has already started and everyone is still out having a good time," stated Amber Garrett, a manager at one of the Charlottesville bars.

"We were monitoring traffic from helicopters and traffic cams in the sky. It never came to a standstill. It got slow at times, but everybody was in the building by 8:15," shared JPJ General Manager Larry Wilson.

Wilson says Scott Stadium would love to host a concert like this every two to three years, but it's tough to find bands that can pull the size crowd that U2 can.

Hotels in the area were also completely sold out. One person told us he and his wife found a place to stay at the Darden School of Business.
